Popular Safety Saves Quilt Back at Safety 2019

Safety Saves Quilt

Due to an overwhelmingly positive response, the ASSP will once again be featuring the SafeStart Safety Saves Celebration Quilt at Safety 2019.

Originally featured at ASSP’s Safety 2018, the Safety Saves Celebration Quilt is an opportunity for safety professionals to tell their story and celebrate their victories by adding a patch to the quilt.

Success is typically measured through TRI numbers in safety. But at SafeStart, success is measured by the lives saved as a result of safety training–which was the inspiration for the quilt. Even though you can’t definitively determine the number of lives saved, industry benchmarks allow SafeStart to estimate the number of fatalities prevented as a result of training.

The reason these successes are often invisible is due to the fact that nothing bad happened. Because nothing bad happened, no one really talks about it. The quilt can highlight how important these safety wins are. Each patch represents an injury prevented, a life saved or a successful but necessary everyday function to remain safe.

SafeStart CEO and co-owner, Barb Tait, explains, “…we started a celebration quilt to celebrate the lives we’ve saved. It’s been fun and rewarding to share the stories and see the faces of the people we’ve helped to protect. So when ASSP leadership came to visit, we were proud to show it to them. Together with the ASSP, we want all members of the safety profession to feel proud of their accomplishments.”

Everyone will be given a chance to add a patch to the Safety Saves Celebration Quilt. Each patch will represent a life saved, an injury prevented, a safety accomplishment, a “thank you” for a job well done, or a proud moment on the job. The quilt aims to help all safety professionals feel the impact of their work, take pride in what they do and inspire the next generation to continue this important work.
