Keeping people safe at work is something that every company strives for but unfortunately, isn’t always successful in achieving. That’s why doing it well should be rewarded—SafeStart has sponsored EHS Daily Advisor Safety Standout Awards since its inception last year.
“The awards have a simple yet important mission: To recognize companies and safety professionals who excel in making their workplaces safe.”
This year’s winners were recognized at Safety Culture 2019 in the following categories:
The Moving Beyond Compliance Award focuses on behavioral safety and human factors that achieve a strong safety culture by surpassing minimum compliance requirements. Chugach Industries Incorporated (CII) was selected for this award because they go beyond traditional safety measures to determine the root cause of unsafe behaviors. Accepting on behalf of the company is their Safety Manager, Thomas Hawthorne.
The Best Safety Committee is presented to a company that not only is focused on improving safety within the workplace but truly emphasizes strong communication with the intention of engaging employees and building the culture. Elzinga & Volkers Construction Professionals received this award for living their safety committee’s commitment statement: “We commit to Lead from the Heart to achieve a World Class Safety Culture that will send every employee home safely—every day.” Senior Field Manager, Scott Wondergem accepted their award.
The Exceptional Progress Award recognizes a safety program that has made improvements with a documented strategy. Creative Millwork of Ohio received this award based on the submission of EHSQ Manager, Roger Stauffer. He implemented the company’s first-ever safety committee to help him take the company’s well-above industry norm injury rate to one year without a lost-time incident. Plus they decreased their medical treatments by 98%. They achieved this through training and went beyond just being on the committee to completing a six-sigma yellow belt course and implementing a wide range of improvement in all areas.
The Best Overall Safety Culture award is pretty self-explanatory. Trihydro looks at their employees as part of the family from day one. The result is safety leaders at every level that extend that culture of safety well beyond the workday into their everyday lives. Trihydro’s Operational and Service Excellence Programs Director, Brian Pelan and Senior Vice President of Corporate Development, George Mathes, accepted the award on behalf of the company.
EHS Daily Advisor also acknowledges the runners-up on a job well done. They include:
- Moving Beyond Compliance—Dynamic Energy Services International, LLC (DYNESI)
- Best Safety Committee—City of Lancaster, California
- Exceptional Progress—Baker Electric, Inc.
- Best Overall Safety Culture—Lockheed Martin, Missiles and Fire Control – Archbald
- Best Overall Safety Culture—Hooper Corporation, Electrical Power Division
Congratulations to all of the winners and runners-up in the Safety Standout Awards.
