SafeStart was delighted to sponsor Shelby Richardson, a high school student at Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Fort McMurray, Alberta, at the Provincial Skills Canada Culinary Arts competition on May 14-15, 2014 in Edmonton.
Provincial Skills Canada is a two-day program in which high school students compete in a range of skilled trades. Experts in each field design a project that tests students’ aptitude in their trade of choice.
The sponsorship was a natural follow-up to the SafeStart safety training pilot project that Shelby and her classmates recently completed in their Foods class. The students learned to incorporate their new SafeStart skills into classroom activities and their daily lives, and we were pleased to give Shelby the opportunity to use her new skills in the competition.
Skills Canada is an ideal fit for SafeStart, as safety is a component of the skills competitions and competitors are expected to follow industry-standard safety guidelines.
The safety skills that SafeStart provides participants—like recognizing that rushing or frustration increases the risk of injury and learning how to prevent accidents—are important whether you’re at work, at home or in the classroom.
It’s important for the next generation of workers to possess the safety skills they need to thrive on the job. Learning to reduce unintentional human error early in life means that students like Shelby are well-equipped with the ability to prevent injuries when they enter the workforce.
We’re proud of Shelby for taking what she learned in the SafeStart school pilot project and showcasing her talents on the provincial stage, and we offer our congratulations on her culinary success!
