Optimists Scout SafeStart for Youth

A young scout poses for the camera

On March 18-19 SafeStart was introduced to Scouts Canada as part of the The Optimist Club of Edmonton’s vision to “bring out the best in kids.” Scouts Canada has a strong culture of safety throughout their organization and SafeStart’s 24/7 safety message is a natural fit for the organization.

Beaver Scouts (ages 5 to 7) received Boo Boo Bandits training while the Cub Scouts (ages 8 to 10) from troop #117 along with Scouts (ages 11 to 14) from troop #144 received SafeStart for Youth training, a four-unit course based on the SafeStart principles geared toward young people.

The SafeStart Education and Athletics teams deliver training in a fun and interactive way for children to learn about the critical errors that cause injuries (like trying to keep your eyes and mind on task while texting). Younger children were also taught how to avoid injury by recognizing hazards. At the end of the training, the Scout troops all said they felt better prepared to safely engage in wilderness activities with SafeStart!
